A total of 173 children are now benefiting from ASSETS bursary after the project has been running for 5 years. The first year of the project saw three pilot schools taken up, namely Mida Primary, Bogamachuko Primary and Mijomboni Primary. More schools have since been assimilated to the project including, Girimacha primary, Nyari primary, Chipande Primary, Kahingoni and Malanga primary.

In the last 5 years, over Ksh 2.8million (£23,500) has been distributed to the children attending over 37 Secondary Schools. We have been able to raise over Ksh 1million (£10,000) through the support of Turtle Bay Beach Club. The Mida mangrove boardwalk and the bird hide which are an integral part of the scheme has generated over Ksh 200,000 (£1800) since it’s opening.

“Beneficiary Days” are also now a regular part of the programme. The beneficiaries and their parent are brought together through an event, where they are educated on specific issues relating to the bursary fund and their environment. Some of the issues illuminated include the importance of protecting their natural environment. School children near the forest © Jacqui KayeASSETS has also achieved enormous effect through encouraging the children and their parent to engage in habitat regeneration through planting of indigenous trees.

ASSETS has registered the ASSETS Parent Association, where they are able to encourage tree planting and setting up of tree nurseries thus encouraging conservation.
